Grey Croft Stone Circle Cumbria

Welcome to the EDGE Guide to the stone circles of Cumbria.

Grey Croft stone circle, Seascale, Cumbria.

Grey Croft Stone Circle
Nearest Town: Whitehaven.
Location: NY 033024, Sheet 89.

Just north of the village of Seascale, the Circle is in land owned by Seascale How Farm (be sure to ask permission to visit the site from the farm) and is approached from the public footpath running along the bottom of the Golf Course.

The circle is small (86ft/27m) but has impressive stones varying in height between 3ft/l m and 6ft/2m. The circle was destroyed in 1820 to enable easier ploughing by digging holes in the earth by the stones and tipping them in!

Thankfully a local School reconstructed the circle in 1949.

Excavations revealed cremated human remains and Bronze Age artefacts.
