Swinside Stone Circle Cumbria

Welcome to the EDGE Guide to the stone circles of Cumbria.

Swinside Stone Circle.

Swinside
Nearest Town: Millom.
Location: SD 172883, Sheet 96.

Possibly the best of all the circles in Cumbria and thankfully fairly easy to get to. It is found to the right of a footpath up a track to Thwaites Fell not far north of Broadgate village off the A595, watch out for the sign post.

Comprising 51 stones of up to 6ft/2m high (one is over 7ft) with a diameter of approximately 95ft/29m. The stones are set close together and almost form a wall, over time other stones have fallen and it is possible that it was originally enclosed, (many of the earliest Stone Circles were built with their stones very close together).
