Iron Hill Stone Circles Cumbria

Welcome to the EDGE Guide to the stone circles of Cumbria.

Iron Hill North stone circle

The Iron Hill Stone Circles
Nearest Town: Penrith.
Location: NY 596147/8 Sheet 91.

Iron Hill is found to the east of Shap off the road to Oddendale.

Iron Hill north (seen above) is now bisected by a dry stone wall making it difficult to get a true impression of the circle's character. The circle is no more than 15m at its widest point. All the stones are fallen.

Iron Hill South stone circle

A few paces down hill brings you to Iron Hill South. Smaller than the northern circle it may be a cairn rather than a circle. Human remains were found within the circle in the early 1800's.

Quarrying has been going on in this area for many years and this has taken its toll on the large number of Bronze Age sites here abouts. Evidence of tumuli and burial mounds can still be seen however, and it is worth bringing your Ordnance Survey maps (as always) with you as an aide in your search.
