Gunnerkeld Stone Circle Cumbria

Welcome to the EDGE Guide to the stone circles of Cumbria.

Gunnerkeld Stone Circle
Nearest Town: Penrith.
Location: NY 568178, Sheet 90.

As with Grey Croft Gunnerkeld is made more striking by its close proximity to an example of modern man - in this case the M6 motorway.

Gunnerkeld is like Birkrigg, a concentric (two rings of stones typically with a common centre) stone circle and as such quite rare, one of only thirty or so in the UK.

The outer circle of stones is some 35m in diameter enclosing the smaller and raised circle of 16m or 17m and surrounds a burial cist.
