The impressive Shaddon Mill building and the accompanying Dixon's
Chimney on Junction Street.
Built in 1836 by the industrious Dixon family, Shaddon Mill was at on time
the biggest cotton mill in the UK.
Shaddon Mill was so large that it needed its own steam engine to power the
looms, this necessitated the building of the
engine rooms and the huge (306ft/93m tall) chimney. Shaddon Mill has recently
been converted into apartments
and this has guaranteed a stable future for the building. The chimney is listed
by English Heritage.
