Bridge House, Ambleside, Cumbria and the Lake District.

The famous Bridge House in Ambleside. Built in its unusual position over Stock Beck in order to avoid taxes; Ambleside was originally divided between the parishes of Grasmere and Troutbeck, Stock Ghyll marked the division so, a building over the beck avoided the taxes raised by either parish.
It dates back to the C17th and in its long history has been; a summer house for the now demolished Ambleside Hall, a cobblers, a pigeon loft, a home to a family of basket weavers (with no less than 6 children crammed into its tiny rooms), and an antiques shop.
Since 1926 Bridge House has been in the care of the National Trust.
